What is the reason for the high incidence of divorce among the Companions, such as Al-Hasan ibn Ali, despite the Shari'ah's prohibition of divorce without a cause or for trivial reasons?

The default ruling for divorce is prohibition, because it constitutes an ungratefulness for the blessing of marriage, and due to the harms that result from it. Thus, it is either unlawful (haram (definition)) or disliked (makruh (definition)), based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "There should be no harm nor reciprocating harm," and his saying: "The most detested permissible thing to Allah is divorce." The frequent divorces reported from some Companions had their reasons, such as alienation, or a physical or moral defect, coupled with the scarcity of the harms of divorce at that time. Frequent divorce was not widespread among the Companions except for a few individuals, and people married them off because they knew that divorce was not harmful to women at that time. The historical narrations that indicate exorbitant numbers in the marriages of Al-Hasan (definition) ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) are not authentically established in terms of their chain of transmission.
