Is it permissible for a husband to divorce his wife without a legitimate Sharia reason, or merely for the sake of renewal and fulfilling desires? Does this count as injustice and manipulation? And can the action of Al-Hasan ibn Ali, may Allah be pleased with them both, be used as evidence for its permissibility?

Marriage has great objectives, such as safeguarding chastity (ihsan), lawful enjoyment, increasing progeny, and attending to the welfare of women and children. Allah has described it as a solemn covenant (mithaq ghalith), and its original state is one of permanence and eternity to achieve its objectives. A husband should retain his wife even if he dislikes her, based on Allah's saying: ﴿And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them – perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good.﴾ [An-Nisa: 19]. A group of scholars disliked divorce without need, and some even considered it forbidden. The spouses and the family should strive to preserve the marriage contract and not harm it, by fearing Allah and living together in kindness.
