Is the feeling of discomfort and inner turmoil when refusing to shake hands with a non-mahram woman, considering the hadith: "Consult your heart three times. Righteousness is that with which the soul is tranquil, and sin is that which wavers in the soul and moves to and fro in the breast, even if people give you a legal ruling again and again," an indication that this act contradicts God's will, or that the hadith might be fabricated, especially with the widespread practice of handshakes among people and the initial impression and aversion it can cause?

The meaning of the Hadith: "Consult your heart even if people give you a fatwa" is that if something is made permissible for a Muslim, but his soul is not at ease with it, then it is better for him to leave it. This applies to one whose heart is illuminated by faith and is righteous. Al-Ghazali said: Consulting the heart is for matters that a mufti has made permissible, not for those he has forbidden. And it is not every heart that is to be consulted, but rather the heart of a knowledgeable and guided person. The Hadith falls under the chapter of wara' (piety/scrupulousness) by avoiding doubtful matters, and not for clear matters with a legal proof. What has a clear text from the Qur'an, Sunnah, or scholarly consensus must be followed, and there is no room for consulting the heart in it. The inclination of the soul towards something other than the text is following one's whims. As for observing reality at the expense of the rulings of Sharia, this is rejected. What is required is to re-shape reality based on Sharia, through patience, good character, and clarifying the truth.
