What is meant by "consult your heart" in the noble Hadith, and how can one reconcile the heart's inclination towards something with the mind's rejection of it for religious and personal reasons, especially with the difficulty of making a decisive choice after Salatul-Istikhara?
Al-Mundhiri reported from Wabisa ibn Ma'bad that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him: "O Wabisa, consult your heart. Righteousness is that to which the soul is at ease and the heart is tranquil. And sin is that which wavers in your heart and causes hesitation in your breast, even if people give you a fatwa and give you fatwas." Al-Albani graded it as hasan li-ghairihi (good due to external corroboration).
The hadith indicates that if a Muslim is given a fatwa that something is permissible, but their soul is not at ease with it, then it is preferable to abandon it. This consultation is specific to those whose hearts are tranquil with faith, like the Companions. It does not mean that fatwas regarding what is lawful and unlawful are to be taken from one's inclinations; rather, it is essential to ask the people of knowledge.
Al-Munawi said: "Consult your tranquil soul, endowed with a light that distinguishes between truth and falsehood." Al-Qurtubi said: "This is valid for someone whose heart Allah has illuminated with knowledge and whose limbs He has adorned with piety."
As for the matter of engagement, a sensible person is advised to seek counsel from those with sound judgment and advice among his family and brothers, and to seek Allah's guidance (istikharah), entrusting the matter to Him. He must also observe the Shariah standards for the woman to be engaged to: first and foremost, her religiosity, and then her character.
Therefore, if the girl is unconcerned with her religion and resistant to advice, it is preferable to turn away from her.
