Is a woman's 'awrah among women from the navel to the knee?

A woman's entire body is considered awrah (private parts that must be covered) in front of non-mahram men. It is not permissible for her to appear before them, even if she is covered, if there is a fear of fitna (temptation). As for her awrah in front of other women, which is the area between the navel and the knee, this is specific to when she is in her home among her sisters and the women of her household.

The fundamental principle is the obligation for a woman to cover her entire body, even in front of her mahrams (unmarriageable kin) and non-mahram women, out of fear of being a source of fitna or of her being described to others. This is based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "A woman should not describe another woman to her husband as if he were looking at her." This includes covering the chest, back, upper arms, shins, and so forth.

This covering is particularly emphasized in public places such as celebrations, wedding halls, hospitals, and schools, so that non-mahram men or adolescents do not see her or take pictures of her that could incite fitna.

A severe warning has been issued against women who display their adornments (tabarruj) or wear thin or tight clothing, as stated in the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "There are two types of people from the inhabitants of Hellfire: women who are clothed yet naked, inclining [to evil] and causing others to incline, their heads like the humps of swaying camels. They will not enter Paradise nor smell its fragrance." This refers to transparent or tight clothing that reveals the size of body parts or has openings that expose attractive features.
