How many authentic Hadiths were narrated from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?

The exact number of authentic hadiths narrated from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, has not been determined, because authentication and weakening are relative, and the hadith and its narrators are not precisely confined. Ibn al-Salah mentioned that Abu Zur'ah al-Razi said: "And who can enumerate the hadith of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when he passed away with one hundred and fourteen thousand Companions?" It was also reported that al-Bukhari said: "I memorized one hundred thousand authentic hadiths and two hundred thousand non-authentic hadiths," but Ibn al-Jawzi commented that what was meant were the طرق (chains of narration), not the متن (texts).

Ibn al-Jawzi pointed out that Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal contains forty thousand hadiths, ten thousand of which are repetitions, and he collected them from over seven hundred and fifty thousand, intending by this the chains of narration. The jurist Najm al-Din al-Qamuli said that the total number of authentic hadiths is fourteen thousand, and that what al-Bukhari and others meant by the multiplicity of hadiths was the multiplicity of chains of narration, isnads, and narrations from the Companions and Tabi'in.

Everything in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim is authentic by agreement, except for a few hadiths, and likewise most of what is in the Sunan collections, Musnad Ahmad, and other authentic books. The five principal books (the two Sahihs and Sunan Abi Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, and al-Nasa'i) did not miss much of the authentic hadith related to rulings. No ruling is derived from knowing the number of hadiths, nor is any action based upon it. A Muslim should strive to act upon, memorize, and disseminate the authentic hadiths that have reached him.
