Knowing the number of hadiths is not beneficial; what is important is to act upon what has been authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. The duration of memorizing hadiths varies with the intelligence of the students. Sheikh Yahya Al-Yahya used to memorize the two Sahihs in two months, and the additional narrations of the Sunan in two months. The number of agreed-upon hadiths in the two Sahihs, without repetition, reached 2514. The unique narrations of Bukhari were 580, and those of Muslim were 960. As for the additional narrations in the Sunan books, they were: Abu Dawud 874, Tirmidhi 370, Nasai 563, Ibn Majah 180, and Darimi 65. The total of all these is approximately six thousand hadiths.
