What was the reason for the Messenger (peace be upon him) secluding himself from his wives?

It is authentically established in the Sahihayn (Bukhari and Muslim) that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, secluded himself from his wives for a month due to his displeasure with them. The narrations differ regarding the reason for his anger. It was said: because Hafsa divulged a secret of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to Aisha. This secret was interpreted as the story of the honey or his intimacy with his concubine Maria in Hafsa's house. And it was said: because they demanded maintenance. It is probable that the combination of these reasons was the motive for his seclusion from them.
