What is the ruling on helping a sister divorce her husband, whom she was forced to marry and with whom she is uncomfortable? And what is the ruling on a father forcing his daughter to marry someone she does not desire?

It is not permissible for a father to coerce his daughter into marrying someone she does not desire, due to the negative consequences this entails for marital life. It has been narrated in a Hadith that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, gave the choice to a young woman whose father had married her to his nephew.

A distinction should be made between two situations:

1. Full Coercion: If her father marries her off against her will without her consent, the daughter has the option after the marriage to either uphold the marriage or annul it. If she is unable to annul the marriage, she may request a divorce or khulʿ (divorce at the wife's instance). It is preferable to advise her to be patient, but if she cannot bear it, there is no blame upon her for seeking separation.

2. Consent with Dislike: If the father exerted pressure on her until she agreed reluctantly, but not under full coercion, then the marriage is valid and she does not have the option to annul it. However, she is permitted to seek khulʿ if she fears she will not be able to observe the limits of Allah with her husband.
