Is Iḍṭibāʿ specific to the Tawāf of Arrival only, or does it also include ʿUmrah, Ḥajj, and the Farewell Tawāf? What is the ruling for one who omits it or performs it in ʿUmrah but not in Ḥajj and the Farewell Tawāf? Do the jurists differ on whether it is in the first three circuits or all seven?

Idtiba' is the act of placing the upper garment over the left shoulder while leaving the right shoulder uncovered. It is a Sunnah according to the majority of jurists during Tawaf al-Qudum (circumambulation of arrival), and its evidence is the action of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. The Malikis, however, do not consider it a Sunnah. Idtiba' is prescribed for every Tawaf that is followed by Sa'i (ritual running between Safa and Marwah), such as Tawaf al-Qudum, Tawaf al-'Umrah (circumambulation of 'Umrah), and Tawaf al-Ziyarah (circumambulation of visit) for those who delayed the Sa'i. Idtiba' is recommended throughout all rounds of the Tawaf. Whoever omits Idtiba' has a valid Tawaf, and there is no penalty upon him because it is a recommended Sunnah, not an obligatory one.
