What is the interpretation of Verse 34 of Surat An-Nisa, especially the part "and strike them"?
The guardianship (qawamah) of a man over a woman is based on Allah's preference for men in terms of intellect and good management, and on his financial support for her. If he ceases to provide for her, his guardianship is revoked. A righteous wife is obedient to her husband, protecting herself and his property in his absence. As for a disobedient (nashiz) wife, her disobedience is addressed first through admonition, then by abandonment in bed, and then by a non-violent beating. If she then obeys, no further action should be taken against her. If these steps are ineffective, the matter is referred to a judge, or two arbitrators from their families are appointed to facilitate reconciliation or separation. The guardianship and preference of a man are generally established, and the beating of a disobedient wife is subject to strict regulations, so the mistakes of some individuals should not be attributed to Islam.
