What is the legal ruling for honoring a guest and neighbor who is stingy when visiting her home, knowing that her financial situation is very good, and my husband forbade me from honoring her due to his feeling of discomfort and her constant exploitation of me?
Honoring and being kind to neighbors are among the most emphasized and greatest rights. The Holy Qur’an has enjoined this, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, affirmed it by saying: "Gabriel kept on enjoining upon me kind treatment of the neighbor until I thought that he would make him an heir." The neighbor’s right over his neighbor is not a matter of reciprocity; rather, every neighbor must be kind to his neighbor, even if the other neighbor falls short in his right. Therefore, the female neighbor should be honored when she visits your home, and kindness should be shown to her, and money should be spent for this purpose, as long as it causes no harm, in obedience to Allah’s command and seeking His pleasure, even if she has fallen short in her duties. Furthermore, the husband should be guided to the importance of being kind and honoring the neighbor and the great reward therein, bearing in mind that it is not permissible to spend from the husband’s money to honor the female neighbor except within reasonable bounds.
