What is the meaning of "ongoing good deeds" (al-hasanat al-jariyah) and "ongoing bad deeds" (al-sayyiat al-jariyah), and what are examples of each?

There is no specific designation in the religious texts or the words of early scholars for "ongoing good deeds" (hasanat jariyah) and "ongoing bad deeds" (sayyi'at jariyah). However, these terms refer to actions whose effects continue after the death of the person who performed them. So, whoever establishes a good practice, such as guiding someone to guidance, or performing a righteous act that people then follow, will receive the reward for his action and the reward of those who follow him. This is in accordance with the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him): "Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward like the rewards of those who follow him..." And whoever establishes a bad practice, such as guiding someone to misguidance, or performing an evil act that people then follow, will bear the burden of his action and the burden of those who follow him, according to the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him): "And whoever calls to misguidance will bear a sin like the sins of those who follow him..." This includes innovations and newly invented matters. As for good practices, they are of two types: either reviving a prescribed Sunnah that has been abandoned, or initiating a righteous deed. Among the actions whose reward benefits a person after his death are ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah), beneficial knowledge, and the supplication of a righteous child.
