Scholars have differed regarding the custody of a mature, discerning girl. Some say there is no custody over her, and she may reside wherever she wishes. Others have assigned custody to the mother, and still others to the father until she marries. If the option of choice is given, or the mother's right is upheld, then the girl may reside with her mother unless the father fears for her safety. Custody applies to a child or an imbecile. As for a mature, discerning adult, they have the choice to reside wherever they wish. It is recommended that a man not live alone, but a young woman is not permitted to live alone.
