Why is it forbidden to educate girls?

Seeking knowledge is not forbidden for a girl; in this, she is like a man, except for what is specifically excluded by evidence, or what results in an action unfitting for her. Sciences are of different types: an individual obligation (fardh 'ayn) like the rulings of prayer; a communal obligation (fardh kifayah) like medicine and Hadith studies; recommended (mustahabb); disliked (makrooh); and forbidden (haram) like magic and mixed-gender education. Men and women are equal in what is forbidden among sciences, either for its inherent nature or for encompassing something forbidden.
