What are the procedures and steps that must be followed before divorce, and if they do not succeed, what must be done thereafter, for someone who has been married for three years and has a daughter?
Divorce should not be resorted to except when all means of reconciliation are exhausted. Reforming a rebellious wife is done through admonition, then by abandoning her in bed, then by a light beating that does not cause injury. If these methods are ineffective, arbitration follows by sending two arbitrators from the families of the husband and wife. If all means of reconciliation are exhausted and they find that separation is more beneficial, then separation is better. The prescribed divorce is for the husband to divorce his wife during a period of purity in which he has not had intercourse with her, and to leave her in her home until her 'iddah (waiting period) ends.
