What are the minimum requirements for a man's attire during prayer, and is it permissible to pray in a mesh-like garment (shabbakah) with shorts that cover the knee? And is it true that "what you are ashamed to wear in front of people, it is not permissible to pray in, even if it covers the 'awrah, because Allah is more deserving of you being ashamed of Him, and if you pray in it, your prayer is invalid"?

The minimum attire permissible for a man to pray in is to cover what is between the navel and the knee with an opaque garment. The proof for this is the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): "Cover your thigh, for the thigh of a man is part of his 'awrah (private parts)." And the statement of Ibn Qudamah that covering the 'awrah with something that does not show the skin is obligatory and a condition for the validity of prayer. If the garment describes the size of the limbs, it is disliked, though the prayer performed in it is valid. However, etiquette with Allah necessitates that a Muslim be in a goodly appearance during prayer, as Allah Almighty says: "O Children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid."
