The phrase "you are free" is one of the ambiguous divorce pronouncements (kinayat al-talaq) by which divorce does not occur except with the intention [to divorce]. If the husband says it to his wife by way of threat or warning, or if he intends by it "you are free to dispose of that thing," then no divorce occurs, because it does not imply the dissolution of the marital bond in any way.
