Is it permissible for men to see the Mothers of the Believers without hijab if they were alive, given that they are their mothers?

The statement that the wives of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, are mahram to all believers is incorrect. They are mothers to the believers in terms of the obligation of righteousness, respect, veneration, and the prohibition of marriage, but not in terms of the permissibility of looking at them or being alone with them in seclusion. It is forbidden to look at them and to be alone with them in seclusion, just as it is forbidden with non-mahram women. They are obligated to observe hijab from those who are not their mahram, as Allah Almighty says: {And when you ask them for something, ask them from behind a screen} [Quran 33:53].
