What is the authenticity of this narration attributed to Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him: "O people, whoever among you sees crookedness in me, let him straighten it – so a man stood up and said to him: By Allah, if we saw crookedness in you, we would straighten it with our swords. So Umar said: Praise be to Allah who made in this Ummah those who straighten Umar's crookedness with their swords," and what is its chain of transmission?

The narration "If you deviate, we will straighten you with our swords" has not been reported in the authenticated books of Hadith. However, similar narrations have been reported, among them what Ibn al-Mubarak narrated in Al-Zuhd that Umar asked Muhammad ibn Maslamah how he saw him. He replied: "I see you strong in collecting wealth, chaste regarding it, just in its distribution. And if you deviate, we will straighten you just as an arrow is straightened in a former." Thereupon Umar said: "Praise be to Allah who made me among a people who, if I deviate, will straighten me." And another narration about Umar, in which Bashir ibn Sa'd said: "If you were to do that, we would straighten you like straightening a spear." Umar then said: "You are indeed you." As for the mention of the sword, it was reported in a weak narration from Mu'awiyah that he said: "Indeed, the wealth is our wealth and the spoils are our spoils. We give to whom we wish, and we withhold from whom we wish." A man then stood up to him and said: "No, rather the wealth is our wealth and the spoils are our spoils. Whoever stands between us and it, we will judge him with our swords." This narration was authenticated by Al-Albani and Husayn Asad.
