A man's saying to his wife, "You are divorced, divorced, divorced" counts as one divorce, unless the husband intended three, in which case it counts as three. If the husband intended to emphasize, that is accepted from him. However, if he intended to effect the divorce and repeated the pronouncements, three divorces occur. If he did not intend anything, only one divorce occurs. Proper seclusion (al-khalwa al-sahiha) is like consummation in terms of completing the dowry, the obligation of the iddah (waiting period), and the validity of reconciliation (rajah). If he takes her back while she is in her iddah, the reconciliation is valid, and renewing the marriage contract is merely a formality. It is advised not to rush into divorce.
