What is the permissible alternative to entertainment in Islamic law for viewing and reading?

The soul needs recreation and relaxation through permissible means to gain strength for obedience and work, as stated in the hadith of Salman and Abu Darda: "Indeed, your Lord has a right over you, and your soul has a right over you, and your family has a right over you; so give everyone who has a right his due." Recreation through permissible means includes hunting, swimming, going out to parks and trips while observing Sharia regulations and good company, engaging in sports, and mental entertainment programs.
