Is it permissible to give away clothes that have rarely been worn—to be placed in a barrel for the needy—as expiation for an oath for someone who does not possess money, and is the expiation considered fulfilled by placing the clothes in the barrel, or must they be given to specific poor individuals, and what is the required amount of clothing for each poor person?

The expiation for an oath is the emancipation of a slave, or clothing ten needy persons, or feeding them. Whoever is unable to do so, must fast for three days. It is a condition for expiation that the emancipated slave be a believer, and that the clothing and feeding be for Muslims. It is not permissible to give the value in cash; rather, the actual clothing or food must be given. This must be done for ten needy persons, not for one needy person ten times. Furthermore, clothes collected in barrels are not sufficient unless it is confirmed that they reach deserving Muslim recipients. As for the description of the clothing, it must be what is sufficient for performing prayer, even if the garment is used, provided it is still suitable for use. It is not sufficient to give a single piece of clothing if the needy person requires two pieces to complete their attire, such as trousers.
