If a wicked person comes with a report and harms an innocent one, and people believe him, are they excused by ignorance, and will their regret, as stated in His Almighty's saying: "and you become regretful for what you have done," be merely a moral regret, or are they complicit with the wicked person in punishment? And is one who follows the Antichrist excused?

The report and testimony of a fasiq (transgressor/evildoer) are not to be accepted, and it is forbidden to harm a Muslim based on them. Whoever accepts the report of a fasiq or assists in harming a Muslim based on it, while knowing the reporter's transgression, is sinful and deserving of the threat [of punishment]. The regret mentioned in the Quran for those who did not verify the report of a fasiq is the worry and sorrow that afflicts a person for harming an innocent party. Whoever intentionally accepts the testimony of a fasiq and harms a Muslim is sinful. As for one who believed the reporter to be just and accepted his statement due to the lack of evidence of his transgression, there is no sin upon him. Accepting the report of a fasiq whose transgression might be hidden is not part of the Fitna (trial) of the Antichrist, whose misguidance is clear. The testimony of a person whose state is unknown is accepted by Abu Hanifa in matters other than Hudud (prescribed punishments), whereas the majority of scholars do not accept it and stipulate knowledge of his uprightness. The view of the majority is closer to the words of Allah Almighty: "from those whom you approve as witnesses" (Quran 2:282). Whoever accepts the testimony of a person whose uprightness is not known, according to the majority, is sinful and has contravened the Sacred Law.
