The acceptance of worship has two meanings: the first is the validity of the act of worship, such that the servant is not required to repeat it; the second is the attainment of reward for it. For the validity of fasting, the intention free from committing invalidating acts is required. For the attainment of reward, it is required that the fasting be performed correctly, while abstaining from sins and innovations; for Allah accepts from the righteous. And the fasting person who does not abandon false speech and acting upon it, Allah has no need for him to leave his food and drink, and his share from his fasting is hunger and thirst. Sins diminish the reward of fasting and may abolish it entirely. One must fast from sins, and this is the primary purpose of fasting, as Allah Almighty said: "that you may become righteous." Whoever fasts outwardly with the body but does not fast inwardly from sins, his fast is very deficient. Among the reasons for the acceptance of fasting is also seeking reward from Allah, for fasting is not a habit or out of shyness. The fasting person must preserve his fast by fasting from sins just as he fasts from things that break it, and he must strive to maintain his obedience, especially the obligatory acts, during Ramadan and thereafter.
