Does the degree of one's faith reflect God's pleasure or wrath towards the servant, or is it a form of trial?

An increase in faith and progress towards perfection are signs of goodness and Allah’s pleasure, as Allah Almighty said: "And those who are guided - He increases them in guidance and gives them their righteousness." And tribulation may be due to the strength of faith, in order to raise one's ranks. As for weak faith and audacity in sin, it may be a sign of Allah’s displeasure, or it may merely be a trial. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, clarified that tribulations are presented to hearts, so whoever absorbs them will have their heart blackened, and whoever rejects them will have their heart whitened.
