Is a wife entitled to seek divorce from her husband who neglects her emotional, intellectual, and physical rights and does not appreciate her, especially after multiple attempts to mend the relationship, while she fears for the custody of the children?

It is advisable not to rush into seeking a divorce, especially when children are involved. Divorce should only be resorted to after all means of reconciliation have failed. If it is possible to continue the marital life amicably, by overlooking some minor faults and compromising on some rights, then this is preferable to separation.

One must beware of falling into the snares of Satan under the pretext of not having emotional needs fulfilled, for this is a false claim and a satanic path. Seeking divorce or khul' (divorce at the wife's instance) is permissible when the husband is disliked and there is a fear of not fulfilling his rights.

Affection and harmony between spouses require patience, overlooking faults, and focusing on the good aspects. Feelings of love are not a prerequisite for the stability of marital life. Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "Woe to you! Were houses not built except upon love? Where then is care and where is responsibility?" He also said: "Not all houses are built on love, but rather on noble lineage and Islam."

Feelings of affection can be cultivated over time through good companionship, and by showing affection and love, even if it requires effort and pretense. These feelings can be enriched in the other spouse through kind gestures, gentle words, gifts, and cooperation in obeying Allah, all while seeking Allah's help and supplicating to Him.
