Indeed, a person's lifespan is the duration of their stay in this world, and it is the sustenance (rizq) which, once exhausted, causes the person to die. Lifespans are preordained and written by Allah; they neither advance nor recede. "And when their term comes, they cannot remain behind an hour, nor can they precede [it]."
As for sustenance (rizq), it is what a person obtains from the things of this world to satisfy their necessities and needs. It refers to everything by which one's needs in life are met. The term "rizq" among the Ahl al- encompasses both the lawful () and the unlawful (), and it refers to what a servant consumes or what Allah has permitted for them and granted them ownership of.
Whatever a person dies before owning or benefiting from is not part of their allotted sustenance in this world. For a person will not depart from this world until they have fully received their sustenance.
