How can the Hadith of the wife of Thabit ibn Qays in Sahih al-Bukhari be reconciled with the Hadith of Thawban: "Any woman who asks her husband for divorce without a sound reason, the scent of Paradise will be forbidden to her"?

There is no contradiction between the hadith about Thabit ibn Qays's wife seeking khul' (divorce at the wife's instance) and the ahadith prohibiting a woman from seeking divorce, because what is forbidden is seeking divorce or khul' without a reason. However, if a woman dislikes her husband and fears that she will not fulfill his rights, she is permitted to seek khul', as did the wife of Thabit ibn Qays. This is because the ahadith of prohibition are understood to apply when there is no compelling reason, and this specialization is indicated by the Prophet's saying, "without a cause."
