What is your justification for some young people and those observing I'tikaf going to pray outside the Prophet's Mosque during the last ten days of Ramadan, claiming a lack of heartfelt devotion or discomfort with the imams' voices?

Prayer in the Prophet's Mosque is multiplied many-fold, and this includes both obligatory and supererogatory prayers. However, maintaining devotion (khushu') in prayer takes precedence over the virtue of the place if the two conflict.

It is recommended to pray supererogatory prayers at home, except for those legislated to be performed in the mosque, such as Tarawih and eclipse prayers.

So, if someone chooses to pray Tarawih in another mosque for the sake of greater devotion, there is no harm in that, even though the imams of the Two Holy Mosques are distinguished by their beautiful recitation and voice.

As for a person observing i'tikaf (spiritual retreat) leaving the Prophet's Mosque to pray 'Isha and Qiyam in another mosque without necessity, their i'tikaf is not valid.

The person observing i'tikaf should observe i'tikaf for the entire last ten days in the Prophet's Mosque and should not leave except out of necessity, or they should observe i'tikaf in the mosque where they regularly pray.
