Is the removal of impurity, according to the Maliki school, not obligatory and not a condition for the validity of prayer, or is it obligatory, and must the prayer be repeated if it is omitted?

There is no contradiction between the Maliki school's opinion that purity is a Sunnah and what is stated in the fatwa regarding the invalidity of the prayer of one who prays with an impure garment, knowing and intentionally. The Malikis differed on whether the purity of the body and garment for prayer is an obligation (fard) or a Sunnah. Those who consider it an obligation maintain that the prayer must be repeated always. Those who consider it a Sunnah maintain that it must be repeated within the time for the forgetful person and for one who found no other [pure garment]. As for the intentional person or the ignorant person who finds a pure garment, he must repeat the prayer always.
