How can we reconcile the rulings of Islamic law with social customs and traditions that contradict them in marriage, in a way that pleases Allah and the family, while taking into account the avoidance of extravagance and wastefulness?

If a woman is an adult and of sound mind, her family does not have the right to object to her marriage to a suitable suitor (kufu’) due to the agreed-upon dowry. She is permitted to accept less than the dowry customary for women of her status (mahr al-mithl). If they prevent her for this reason, the one preventing her becomes an adil (one who unjustly obstructs marriage), and the ruler (or judge) shall arrange her marriage. However, it is advisable not to defy the family if the customary dowry is within the suitor's means.
