The question

Is one who supplicates to Allah to be blessed with male offspring, without females, sinful due to an obsessive-compulsive disorder that makes him fear that any daughter he might father would be ugly, just as he perceives himself to be?

The answer

It is permissible for a Muslim to supplicate to Allah Almighty for his offspring to be male rather than female, as there is no sin or severance of kinship in this, according to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: "The supplication of any one of you will be granted as long as he does not supplicate for a sin or the cutting off of kinship, and as long as he is not hasty."

It is more appropriate for a servant to supplicate to Allah Almighty for righteous, healthy offspring who will be a comfort to their parents' eyes, because a person does not know what is good for him, whether in males or females. Allah Almighty said: "But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not."
