Must a man re-issue the expiation for intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan after he learned that the sheikh he authorized to issue it had given it in cash to one needy person instead of feeding sixty needy persons?

Expiation is obligatory for whoever intentionally engages in intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan (definition), provided they are among those for whom fasting is obligatory. It is to be performed in sequence: freeing a slave, and if one cannot find a slave, then fasting for two consecutive months. If one is unable to fast, then feeding sixty poor persons. If the person for whom expiation is obligatory is unable to fast, and they paid the expiation to the Imam of the mosque who acted according to the Hanafi school of thought (which permits giving the value or feeding one poor person the food equivalent to that for sixty poor persons), then their expiation is valid. However, if they were able to fast, or if they were unable but the Imam was ignorant, then the expiation is not sufficient, and it remains a debt upon them. They must repent and fast for two consecutive months if able, otherwise they must feed sixty poor persons. What they paid to the Imam is considered charity for which they will be rewarded.
