Does the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, "Make your food good and your supplication will be answered," apply to a smoker, and is smoking considered eating and drinking what is unlawful, thereby preventing the answering of prayers, nullifying good deeds, and nourishing the body with unlawful things?

The circulating Hadith (definition) attributed to Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, "Purify your food, and your supplication will be answered," is very weak. However, its meaning is affirmed in other Hadiths, including the Hadith narrated by Abu Hurayrah in Sahih (definition) Muslim, where the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "(O people, indeed Allah is good and accepts only what is good...)" He then mentioned a man who raises his hands in supplication while his food, drink, and clothing are from unlawful sources, and he has been nourished by unlawful means, so how can his supplication be answered? What is meant by unlawful here is consuming people's wealth unjustly, such as through theft, bribery, and usury. Smoking does not appear to fall under this category, but there is a concern that a smoker may be deprived of having their supplication answered due to their persistence in sin, because Allah accepts from the righteous. Furthermore, among the impediments to the acceptance of supplication are: persistence in sins, consuming unlawful earnings, supplicating with a heedless heart, and abandoning enjoining good and forbidding evil.
