What is the ruling on slaughtering mules and donkeys?

It is impermissible to eat the meat of mules and domestic donkeys, for it is unlawful and impure; ritual slaughter does not purify it. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade it, while permitting the consumption of horse meat.
