The answer

“Al-bit‘” is a honey wine, and it is permissible as long as it does not reach the point of intoxication. If it reaches the point of intoxication, then both small and large quantities of it are forbidden, based on the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) saying: “Every drink that intoxicates is forbidden.”

It was narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that they used to prepare nabidh for the Prophet (peace be upon him) and he would drink it in the morning and in the evening. And from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to drink nabidh made from raisins on that day, the next day, and the day after. If it was the evening of the third day, he would drink it and give it to others to drink. If anything remained, he would pour it out.

In summary, it is permissible to drink nabidh as long as it is sweet and has not changed. It is obligatory to test nabidh before drinking it if it has been kept for two days or so, by its smell or change. If there is any doubt about it, one should do as the Prophet (peace be upon him) did. As for grape juice, it is not considered (intoxicant) unless it changes and becomes intoxicating.
