The bride sitting on an elevated platform is an old custom among Muslims, and the original meaning of the text is elevation and display. There is no harm in the bride sitting on a platform in front of women only, provided she is veiled from non-mahram (definition) men, and without drums or music. However, men seeing the bride or the bride sitting with her husband in front of unveiled women is forbidden because it involves temptation (fitna) and violates Allah’s command to lower the gaze. The prohibition stems from the cause of mixing and looking, not from imitating Jews.
