Is wearing the khimar or headscarf and glasses obligatory for women in the Qur’an and Sunnah?
Source: FtawySummarized from the full answer at Ftawy · imported Sep 2, 2026
A woman must cover her entire body in front of non- men with clothing that is neither form-fitting nor transparent. A headscarf (mandil) does not achieve the required covering. Therefore, it must be replaced with a wide khimar that covers the head, face, and neck. The eyes must also be covered because they can be a source of temptation, especially if the woman is beautiful. It is not permissible to expose the eyes with glasses because they do not achieve concealment. However, if a woman needs glasses due to poor eyesight and cannot see with the covering, there is no sin upon her in exposing them with or without glasses, to avoid hardship.
