Is it true that whoever commits major sins, as mentioned, and repents from them, must be purified in this world through such things as repentance, seeking forgiveness, effacing good deeds, calamities, and the torment of the grave, and that Allah intensifies matters for him at the time of death, and if he is not sufficiently purified, he will be purified in the fire of Hell? And is he purified by one of these purifiers or by all of them? And how can the repentant person avoid that? And is it true that whoever is not purified by that will be purified in the fire of Hell?

Purification from major sins, such as fornication and theft, occurs through repentance or through the prescribed punishment (حد) if one applies. Good deeds do not expiate them, for the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The five daily prayers, Friday prayer to Friday prayer, and Ramadan (definition) to Ramadan are expiations for what is between them, as long as major sins are avoided." Repentance alone is sufficient if Allah the Almighty accepts it, for Allah the Almighty says: "And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever does that will meet a penalty. Multiplied for him is the punishment on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein humiliated – Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous deeds. For them Allah will change their evil deeds into good ones. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful. And whoever repents and does righteousness – then indeed, he has turned to Allah with [accepted] repentance" [Al-Furqan: 68-71].
