Is it permissible for a menstruating woman to attend Friday prayer solely to listen to the sermon?

It is not permissible for a menstruating woman to sit in the mosque to listen to the sermon; rather, it is forbidden for her to remain therein. However, if she sits in an annex to the mosque or near it, there is no harm in that, because she has not entered the mosque. This is indicated by the hadith (definition) of Umm 'Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) "commanded menstruating women to keep away from the prayer-place of the Muslims." A menstruating woman is not permitted to enter the mosque except to pass through it for a need, provided there is no risk of defiling the mosque, by analogy with a person in a state of major ritual impurity (junub), based on the Almighty’s saying: ﴿O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying or in a state of janabah, except those passing through [a mosque], until you have washed [your whole body].﴾
