Should an engagement continue with a young man who abuses hashish, knowing that he treats her well and prays sometimes, and this is after a five-year love story and the father's rejection?

First: A Muslim girl must beware of what is called "love" that is followed by false emotions and unlawful meetings, for there is no joy in disobeying Allah and no happiness in defying His command. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said: "The infatuation with a non-mahram (definition) woman contains corruption that only the Lord of the Worlds can enumerate. It is one of the diseases that corrupt a person's religion, then it may corrupt his intellect, then his body." Ibn al-Qayyim said: "Infatuation is a disease of the heart... And if it takes hold and becomes strong, its cure becomes difficult for physicians."

Second: If the young man has those characteristics, such as drug use, not observing prayers, and his words cannot be trusted, then you are not safe with him, and he should not be accepted. Do not regret losing him, and supplicate to Allah to grant you someone better and more righteous. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen said: "The guardian must fear Allah Almighty concerning those He has placed under his guardianship. If a suitable man proposes to her, he should marry her off if she agrees. If an unsuitable man proposes, he should not marry her off, even if she agrees to this man who is not suitable in his religious commitment."
