What is the ruling on leaving the pubic hair untrimmed for more than forty nights?

A time limit has been set for shaving pubic hair, which is that it should not be left for more than forty nights. It is preferable to attend to it before this period, and it is disliked to delay it beyond forty days. Some scholars view this as forbidden, while others consider it obligatory, based on the hadith (definition) narrated by Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him: "A time limit was set for us regarding the trimming of the mustache, the clipping of nails, the plucking of armpit hair, and the shaving of pubic hair: that we should not leave them for more than forty nights." (Narrated by Muslim).
