What is the interpretation of verses 55 and 56 from Surat Al-Hijr, and what is the meaning of the angels’ saying to Ibrahim (peace be upon him): "We have given you glad tidings in truth, so do not be of the despairing," taking into account the whispers of Satan that God does not accept the supplication of those who have aged and committed sins, and comparing that with the verse: "Then [I swear by] the truth, and the truth I speak, that I will surely fill Hell with you and those of them who follow you all together," and the Hadith: "Each is eased to what he was created for"?
The angels' statement to Abraham (peace be upon him), "Do not be afraid. Indeed, we give you good tidings of a knowing boy," came after he expressed astonishment at the good news of having a child in his old age. This astonishment did not indicate despair of Allah's mercy or a denial of His power; rather, it was an inquisitive wonder at how such an event usually occurs. The angels affirmed that their tidings were true from Allah Almighty, and their saying, "So do not be among the despairing," was a gentle warning lest the matter lead him to despair of Allah's mercy, and not an accusation of despair. Abraham responded by affirming, "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except those astray?" Despairing of Allah's mercy is considered one of the major sins, and it is not permissible for a believer to despair of Allah's mercy, even if he is advanced in age or his sins have multiplied. Rather, he must think good of Allah and supplicate to Him, being certain of a response.
