What is meant by the characteristics of the needy mentioned in the Prophet's saying (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Allah, resurrect me among the company of the needy"?

This phrasing is a hadith (definition) narrated by Abd ibn Humayd and Ibn Majah with an authentic chain of transmission from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to say: "O Allah, make me live as a miskin, and make me die as a miskin, and gather me in the company of the misakin." Masakanah here means destitution and need for money, and its origin is from sukoon, meaning inactivity and humility, as poverty makes the miskin inactive and humble. Ibn Majah understood the hadith in this way, so he included it in the Book of Zuhd (Asceticism), chapter on befriending the poor. Abu Sa'id al-Khudri also understood it this way when he said at the beginning of the hadith: "Love the misakin, for I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say..." This hadith indicates the perfection of the Prophet's character, his asceticism, and his humility.
