Why were the scholars hurt by those who reviled the Companions, but not hurt by those who fought and excommunicated Imam Ali, or by those who reviled Mu'awiyah, while they deemed trustworthy those who reviled Imam Ali?
The article corrects the names of some narrators. "Janab al-Asadi" is correctly Yunus ibn Khabbab al-Asadi, who used to insult Othman. "Abdullah ibn Musa" is correctly Ubaydullah ibn Musa, who spoke against Muawiyah. The article mentions that Imam Ahmad stopped narrating from Ubaydullah ibn Musa due to his Shiism, his being a source of confusion (takhleet), and his narration of objectionable (munkarat) reports. As for Hareez ibn Othman, Al-Bukhari narrated from him because he recanted his animosity (nasb). There are also narrations that absolve him of the accusation of speaking against Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). The article stated that Hareez's hatred for Ali—if it is true—was because Ali killed his ancestors in Siffin. Ibn Taymiyyah differentiated between hating a person for their righteousness (which is hypocrisy) and hating them for a natural reason (which is misguidance or ignorance).
