The question

What is the ruling on being employed at Al Rajhi Bank by submitting a CV to a colleague who works at the bank, rather than through the usual application process, and what is the ruling on this if it would lead to one being given priority over someone who applied through official channels? And is it considered an injustice if favoritism gives one person priority over another who has a greater right? Is favoritism permissible for employment in a company that requires a higher grade than the applicant possesses? What is the ruling on favoritism in government departments by submitting documents to a specific manager to ensure they are not lost and to expedite procedures? Is it true that favoritism is permissible in the private sector and forbidden in the public sector?

The answer

The issue of the permissibility of intercession (wasta) in employment can be summarized by differentiating between governmental and private sector jobs. Intercession in governmental jobs is not permissible if it leads to the employment of an undeserving individual or to prioritizing someone less competent, because the rights in these positions are public, and the most qualified person must be chosen. As for the private sector, intercession is permissible for someone who is qualified for the job, even if they are less competent than others, provided that there is no deception of the employer, and the matter of accepting the employment rests with the employer.
