What is the ruling on selling the hide of the 'aqiqah due to my forgetfulness?
Source: FtawySummarized from the full answer at Ftawy · imported Sep 2, 2026
It is not permissible to sell the hide of the ' (sacrificial animal for a newborn) because it is an animal slaughtered for the sake of Allah. This is the view of the Maliki and Shafi'i schools of thought. However, if the sale occurred out of forgetfulness, there is no sin upon the doer, for Allah Almighty says: "Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make a mistake," and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "My Ummah has been forgiven for mistakes, forgetfulness, and what they are coerced into." In this case, the price of the hide must be given in charity.
