Anal sex with a woman and sodomy are major sins, but they do not constitute disbelief that expels one from the faith. Rather, they are types of transgressions. The hadith "Whoever has anal sex with his wife has disbelieved" is interpreted to mean either one who deems it permissible (mustahill) or that it is a lesser disbelief (kufr duna kufr) that does not expel one from the faith. The perpetrator of these sins must repent with sincere repentance, for Allah's mercy is vast, and He forgives all sins for those who repent. He must also know that abandoning prayer is a greater sin than these transgressions. The advisor should open the doors of hope for him and remind him of the vastness of Allah's mercy.
