What is the role of the Imam in society?

The Imam must be aware of his responsibility as a teacher, a Mufti, an exemplar, and an educator. He must acquire as much religious knowledge as he can and adorn himself with noble character. He should have a good inner self and outer conduct, in his piety, asceticism, humility, and forbearance, so that he may fulfill his role in teaching people and offering them advice. He is responsible for his congregation, and specific duties are incumbent upon him, such as teaching the ignorant, checking on the conditions of the worshipers, visiting the sick, helping the needy, and consoling the afflicted. These matters are more emphasized in his regard.
